History of the Douglas SBD-5 Dauntless
The Douglas SBD Dauntless was a carrier-based scout and dive bomber operated by the United States Navy and Marine Corps during World War II. Designed for precision attacks against enemy warships and other important targets, the Dauntless became one of the most successful American naval aircraft of the Pacific War.
The aircraft is especially remembered for its decisive role in the Battle of Midway in June 1942, when American SBD dive bombers helped sink four Japanese aircraft carriers. The Dauntless continued serving throughout the Pacific campaign, participating in major naval operations as American forces advanced toward Japan.
The improved SBD-5 variant entered service in 1943 and featured a more powerful Wright R-1820 radial engine along with other refinements. Although newer aircraft gradually replaced the Dauntless in frontline carrier service, the SBD-5 remained an important part of American naval aviation during the later stages of the war.
Battle of the Philippine Sea – June 1944
The Battle of the Philippine Sea took place on June 19–20, 1944, during the American invasion of the Mariana Islands. The engagement became one of the largest aircraft carrier battles in history and resulted in a major defeat for Japanese naval aviation.
Often remembered for the aerial engagement known as the Great Marianas Turkey Shoot, the battle demonstrated the effectiveness of American carrier aviation and helped establish Allied naval superiority in the Pacific. Academy's Battle of the Philippine Sea-themed SBD-5 kit provides an opportunity to explore this important period of World War II naval aviation through scale modeling.

The accurately reproduced cockpit, radial engine, dive brakes, and landing gear provide excellent areas for careful painting and detailing, while the photo-etched parts add refinement to the finished aircraft.
The included Cartograf decals allow builders to recreate one of three aircraft marking options. Modelers can further enhance the aircraft with authentic US Navy camouflage colors, panel line washes, exhaust staining, and subtle operational weathering.
Whether displayed alongside other World War II carrier aircraft or incorporated into a Pacific Theater aviation diorama, the Academy SBD-5 Dauntless makes an impressive addition to a military aircraft model collection.
