History of the Douglas SBD-2 Dauntless
The Douglas SBD Dauntless was a carrier-capable scout and dive bomber operated by the United States Navy and Marine Corps during World War II. Developed before America's entry into the conflict, the Dauntless became one of the most recognizable aircraft of the Pacific Theater.
The SBD-2 was an early production variant featuring improvements over the original SBD-1, including increased fuel capacity for extended operations. Initially operated by the US Navy, some SBD-2 aircraft were subsequently transferred to Marine Corps units, including aircraft stationed at Midway Atoll.
Powered by a Wright R-1820 radial engine, the Dauntless was designed to deliver bombs accurately against enemy ships and ground targets. Its distinctive perforated dive flaps helped control airspeed during steep bombing attacks, making the aircraft particularly effective in its intended role.
Battle of Midway – June 1942
The Battle of Midway, fought June 4–7, 1942, marked a turning point in the Pacific War. American naval and Marine Corps aircraft confronted a powerful Japanese carrier force attempting to capture Midway Atoll.
Marine Corps SBD-2 Dauntless aircraft stationed at Midway participated in attacks against the Japanese fleet. Although the newer SBD-3 variant carried out the famous carrier-based dive-bombing attacks that helped sink four Japanese aircraft carriers, the earlier SBD-2 also played a role in the battle through the defense of Midway.
Academy's SBD-2 Battle of Midway model kit provides an opportunity to recreate one of these early-war American dive bombers and explore the history of the Pacific campaign through scale modeling.
