FMC 4700 Covered Hoppers – Versatile Dry-Bulk Freight Cars

The FMC 4700 covered hopper was designed for transporting dry bulk commodities that required protection from the elements. Its approximately 4,700-cubic-foot capacity made it well suited to agricultural and other bulk commodity shipments throughout the North American railroad network.

Covered hoppers of this general design became familiar sights at grain elevators, agricultural processing facilities, rail yards, and industrial loading locations. Their enclosed bodies, roof hatches, and bottom discharge outlets allowed commodities to be loaded and unloaded efficiently while remaining protected during transportation.
