This highly detailed Genesis model represents Amtrak AMTK #82 wearing the striking Phase VII paint scheme, bringing a modern Amtrak appearance to Athearn's detailed P42DC platform.
The GE P42DC became one of the most recognizable locomotives in Amtrak's nationwide passenger fleet. Rated at 4,250 horsepower with a top speed of 100 mph, these Genesis-series passenger locomotives have served on both short- and long-distance Amtrak trains throughout the United States.
Athearn recreates Amtrak #82 with its road-number-specific as-built antenna configuration. Athearn also notes that Phase VII units #82 and #174 represent the first time these locomotives have been offered in HO Scale in this paint scheme. The model features a detailed cab interior with appropriate controls and seats, newly tooled illuminated number boards, LED lighting, flexible rubber MU and trainline hoses, separately applied wire handrails, an exhaust stack, photo-etched metal radiator fan grille, and extensive underframe detailing.
This locomotive is DCC Ready and features Athearn Quick Plug plug-and-play technology with a 21-pin NEM decoder connector, allowing installation of a compatible aftermarket DCC decoder. Rear marker lights are installed but are not connected on the DCC Ready version.
Underneath, Athearn's proven Genesis driveline combines a 5-pole skew-wound motor, precision-machined flywheels, a multi-link drivetrain, all-wheel drive, and all-wheel electrical pickup for smooth and reliable operation. A completely redesigned die-cast frame provides excellent tractive effort, while McHenry scale knuckle couplers and RP25 wheel contours complete this fully assembled, ready-to-run Amtrak locomotive.
