This highly detailed Genesis locomotive represents Amtrak AMTK #164 wearing its eye-catching Phase IV Heritage paint scheme, complete with road-number-specific modern details and factory-installed SoundTraxx Tsunami2 DCC and sound.
Amtrak has decorated several locomotives in special heritage and commemorative schemes celebrating milestones throughout the railroad's history. Amtrak #164 carries the Phase IV Heritage scheme, recreating one of Amtrak's classic paint designs on a modern GE P42DC. Athearn notes that this release marks the first Phase IV Heritage #164 offered in the Genesis line.
The GE P42DC became one of the most recognizable locomotives in Amtrak's nationwide passenger fleet. Rated at 4,250 horsepower with a top speed of 100 mph, the P42DC has been used extensively on short- and long-distance passenger trains throughout the United States.
Athearn recreates Amtrak #164 with its road-number-specific PTC antenna farm featuring the distinctive “box” platform. The Genesis model also features a detailed cab interior with appropriate controls and seats, newly tooled illuminated number boards, flexible rubber MU and trainline hoses, separately applied wire handrails, an exhaust stack, photo-etched metal radiator fan grille, and extensive underframe detailing.
This locomotive comes factory equipped with an onboard SoundTraxx Tsunami2 DCC/Sound decoder and dual round speakers. It operates on both DC and DCC layouts, with engine, horn, and bell sounds available during DC operation and full sound, lighting, and control functions available in DCC mode. The ditch lights alternate when the horn is activated in DCC, while the front and rear marker lights are independently controlled and directional.
Underneath, Athearn's Genesis driveline combines a 5-pole skew-wound motor, precision-machined flywheels, a multi-link drivetrain, all-wheel drive, and all-wheel electrical pickup for smooth and reliable operation. A completely redesigned die-cast frame provides excellent tractive effort, while McHenry scale knuckle couplers and RP25 wheel contours complete this fully assembled, ready-to-run Amtrak locomotive.
