Recreate early Phase V Amtrak passenger operations with the Athearn Genesis HO Scale GE P42DC Amtrak Phase V Low Wave #162 – DCC/Sound – ATHG-1695. This highly detailed Genesis model represents Amtrak AMTK #162 wearing the distinctive early Phase V “Low Wave” paint scheme, complete with road-number-specific details and factory-installed SoundTraxx Tsunami2 DCC and sound.
Phase V became Amtrak's standard locomotive paint scheme beginning in 2000. Early repaints differed from later Phase V locomotives, featuring a lighter shade of blue, a blue sill stripe, and small Travelmark logos on the cab and sill. Athearn recreates this distinctive “Low Wave” appearance, marking the first time the scheme has appeared in the Genesis line and its first availability in more than 20 years.
Athearn recreates Amtrak #162 with its road-number-specific as-built antenna configuration. Additional Phase V Low Wave details include the correct lighter shade of blue, large and small Sinclair antennas, and as-built air dryer guards. The model also features a detailed cab interior with appropriate controls and seats, newly tooled illuminated number boards, flexible rubber MU and trainline hoses, separately applied wire handrails, an exhaust stack, photo-etched metal radiator fan grille, and extensive underframe detailing.
This locomotive comes factory equipped with an onboard SoundTraxx Tsunami2 DCC/Sound decoder and dual round speakers. It operates on both DC and DCC layouts, with engine, horn, and bell sounds available during DC operation and full sound, lighting, and control functions available in DCC mode. The ditch lights alternate when the horn is activated in DCC, while the front and rear marker lights are independently controlled and directional.
Underneath, Athearn's Genesis driveline combines a 5-pole skew-wound motor, precision-machined flywheels, a multi-link drivetrain, all-wheel drive, and all-wheel electrical pickup for smooth and reliable operation. A completely redesigned die-cast frame provides excellent tractive effort, while McHenry scale knuckle couplers and RP25 wheel contours complete this fully assembled, ready-to-run Amtrak locomotive.
