This highly detailed Genesis locomotive represents Amtrak AMTK #144 in the familiar Phase V paint scheme, complete with its road-number-specific PTC antenna arrangement and factory-installed SoundTraxx Tsunami2 DCC and sound.
The General Electric P42DC became one of the most recognizable locomotives in Amtrak's nationwide passenger fleet. Rated at 4,250 horsepower and capable of speeds up to 100 mph, the P42DC has powered both short- and long-distance Amtrak trains throughout the United States. Phase V served as Amtrak's standard locomotive paint scheme from 2000 until its replacement by Phase VII in 2022.
Athearn recreates Amtrak #144 with its road-number-specific PTC antenna farm and angled air dryer guards. The model also features a detailed cab interior with appropriate controls and seats, newly tooled illuminated number boards, flexible rubber MU and trainline hoses, separately applied wire handrails, an exhaust stack, photo-etched metal radiator fan grille, and extensive underframe detailing including air tanks, air lines, air filter, and air dryer.
This locomotive comes factory equipped with an onboard SoundTraxx Tsunami2 DCC/Sound decoder and dual round speakers. It operates on both DC and DCC layouts, with engine, horn, and bell sounds available during DC operation and full sound, lighting, and control functions available in DCC mode. The front and rear marker lights are operational, independently controlled, and directional, while the ditch lights alternate when the horn is activated in DCC.
Underneath, Athearn's Genesis driveline combines a 5-pole skew-wound motor, precision-machined flywheels, a multi-link drivetrain, all-wheel drive, and all-wheel electrical pickup for smooth and reliable operation. A completely redesigned die-cast frame provides excellent tractive effort, while Krupp-MaK trucks, McHenry scale knuckle couplers, and RP25 wheel contours complete this fully assembled, ready-to-run Amtrak P42DC.
