This highly detailed Genesis model represents Missouri Pacific MP #1716, part of MP's fleet of 30 GP15AC locomotives numbered 1715–1744. Missouri Pacific purchased the GP15AC fleet from EMD in 1982 for yard, local freight, and light road assignments.
The GP15AC was a specialized variation of EMD's GP15 series that used AC power for the traction motors instead of the traditional DC system. Missouri Pacific purchased 30 GP15AC locomotives, making the type a distinctive part of the railroad's diesel roster. Athearn recreates MP #1716 with prototype-specific details including Blomberg B trucks, a Leslie 3-chime horn, front and rear small EMD plows, illuminated number boards, four spark arrestors, and a rounded front anticlimber. Operating class lights are also provided when the locomotive is equipped with DCC.
Additional Genesis detailing includes a full cab interior, coupler cut levers, trainline and MU hoses, windshield wipers, wire grab irons, walkway tread, lift rings, sander lines, fine-scale handrails, and a detailed fuel tank. Underneath, Athearn's Genesis driveline combines a 5-pole skew-wound motor, precision-machined flywheels, a multi-link drivetrain, all-wheel drive, and all-wheel electrical pickup for smooth and reliable operation. This model is DCC Ready with Quick Plug plug-and-play technology and a 21-pin NEM connector for installation of a compatible aftermarket decoder.
