This highly detailed Genesis model represents Missouri Pacific MP #1716, part of MP's fleet of 30 GP15AC locomotives numbered 1715–1744. Missouri Pacific purchased these locomotives from EMD in 1982 for yard, local freight, and light road assignments.
The GP15AC was a specialized variation of EMD's GP15 series, and Missouri Pacific was the only railroad in the United States to purchase the model new. Athearn recreates MP #1716 with prototype-specific details including operating class lights, Blomberg B trucks, Leslie 3-chime horn, front and rear small EMD plows, illuminated number boards, four spark arrestors, and a rounded front anticlimber.
Additional Genesis details include a full cab interior, coupler cut levers, trainline and MU hoses, windshield wipers, wire grab irons, walkway tread, lift rings, sander lines, fine-scale handrails, and a detailed fuel tank. Underneath, Athearn's Genesis driveline combines a 5-pole skew-wound motor with precision-machined flywheels, all-wheel drive, and all-wheel electrical pickup for smooth and reliable operation.
This DCC/Sound model comes factory-equipped with a SoundTraxx Tsunami2 sound decoder and dual cube speakers. Full DCC functionality includes precision slow-speed control and programmable locomotive functions, while engine, horn, and bell sounds also operate when the locomotive is used on a DC layout.
