Following the 1998 division of Conrail, Norfolk Southern acquired 58 former Conrail GP15-1 locomotives, which continued working in switching, local freight, and secondary service. This Genesis model recreates NS #1440 with road-number-specific details for an accurate representation of the prototype.
Norfolk Southern #1440 features a cab signal box and rear grab irons. Additional Norfolk Southern details include class lights, a Leslie RS3L horn mounted on a low-profile bracket, and front and rear ditch lights that alternate when the horn is sounded during DCC/Sound operation. The locomotive rides on Blomberg B trucks and includes operating number boards, a full cab interior, coupler cut levers, trainline and MU hoses, windshield wipers, wire grab irons, walkway tread, lift rings, sander lines, fine-scale handrails, and a detailed fuel tank.
Underneath, Athearn's Genesis driveline combines a 5-pole skew-wound motor, precision-machined flywheels, all-wheel drive, and all-wheel electrical pickup for smooth and reliable operation. A heavy die-cast frame provides additional traction and pulling power, while body-mounted McHenry operating scale knuckle couplers and RP25 wheel contours provide dependable performance. This model comes factory-equipped with a SoundTraxx Tsunami2 DCC/Sound decoder and dual cube speakers and operates on both DC and DCC layouts.
