BNSF #2732 - Former Burlington Northern EMD GP39-2

Burlington Northern purchased 40 late-production EMD GP39-2 locomotives in 1981. Designed as versatile four-axle road switchers, these locomotives used a turbocharged 12-cylinder EMD 645E3 engine producing approximately 2,300 horsepower.

When Burlington Northern and Santa Fe merged in 1995, the former BN GP39-2 fleet became part of BNSF Railway. Many locomotives retained their original Burlington Northern paint schemes for years before receiving updated BNSF corporate colors.

By the late 2010s, BNSF had begun repainting additional members of the former BN GP39-2 fleet. Selected units were also modified for specialized yard and remote-control service, extending the usefulness of these four-axle diesel locomotives.
