Delaware & Hudson GP39-2 #7603 Prototype History

In 1976, the Delaware & Hudson Railway purchased 20 new EMD GP39-2 locomotives, numbered 7601 through 7620. These four-axle road switchers featured several distinctive design characteristics that differentiated them from the railroad's earlier former Reading GP39-2 locomotives.

The D&H 7600-series locomotives featured redesigned switcher-style steps, a rearward-positioned fuel tank, and revised fuel filler and sight gauge locations. These changes gave the locomotives a distinctive appearance while maintaining the versatility of EMD's GP39-2 design.

Powered by a turbocharged 12-cylinder EMD 645E3 diesel engine producing 2,300 horsepower, the GP39-2 was designed to provide efficient performance for freight and road-switching assignments.
