Delaware & Hudson GP39-2 #7620 Prototype History
The Delaware & Hudson Railway was an important northeastern railroad serving New York, Pennsylvania, and connections throughout the region. Known for its distinctive diesel locomotive fleet and freight operations, the D&H played an important role in moving merchandise, industrial commodities, and interchange traffic.
In 1976, Delaware & Hudson purchased 20 new EMD GP39-2 diesel locomotives numbered D&H 7601 through 7620. These locomotives featured several distinctive design changes compared with earlier GP39-2 units acquired from the Reading Railroad.
The D&H 7600-series locomotives incorporated redesigned stepwells with switcher-style steps, a fuel tank positioned farther toward the rear, and relocated fuel fillers and sight gauges. These differences created a recognizable body configuration that Athearn has reproduced with newly tooled components.
The EMD GP39-2 was manufactured between 1974 and 1984 as a four-axle diesel-electric road switcher. Powered by a turbocharged 12-cylinder EMD 645E3 engine producing approximately 2,300 horsepower, the GP39-2 offered fuel-efficient performance for freight assignments and regional railroad operations.
