Bethlehem Steel F89-F – A Versatile North American Flatcar

Introduced during the early 1960s, the Bethlehem Steel F89-F became one of the most recognizable long flatcars in American railroading. More than 9,000 examples were manufactured at Bethlehem Steel's Johnstown, Pennsylvania facility, measuring approximately 89 feet 8 inches over the strikers.

These versatile railroad flatcars featured distinctive C-channel side sills and adaptable deck arrangements. Although many were assigned to Trailer Train piggyback service, others were built for individual railroads and frequently used as the foundation for autorack equipment.

Over time, numerous F89-F flatcars were modified or reassigned for additional freight applications, including Trailer-On-Flatcar (TOFC) service, vehicle transportation, pipe loads, and structural steel movements. Their durability and flexibility helped keep the design in service through multiple generations of North American railroading.
