Atlas N Scale Code 55 #2.5 Wye Turnout – ATL2056 provides compact, symmetrical turnout geometry for junctions, yards, engine facilities and other specialized N scale track arrangements. Part of the Atlas N Scale Code 55 track system, this wye turnout features fine nickel silver rail with simulated brown wood ties for a realistic, prototypical track appearance.
Unlike a conventional left- or right-hand turnout, a wye turnout divides one incoming track into two diverging routes. Both routes curve away from the centerline, creating a symmetrical track arrangement that is useful wherever a conventional straight-and-diverging turnout does not fit the desired track plan.
#2.5 Wye Turnout Geometry
ATL2056 is specifically designed as a #2.5 wye turnout. The #2.5 designation describes the turnout's frog geometry and should not be confused with the #5 designation used on Atlas's conventional left- and right-hand Code 55 turnouts.
Because both routes diverge from the centerline, a wye turnout provides different track-planning possibilities than a standard left- or right-hand turnout and can be especially useful when building compact symmetrical track arrangements.
What Is a Wye Turnout?
A wye turnout has one track entering from one end and two diverging routes leaving the opposite end. Rather than having one route continue essentially straight while the other diverges, both routes of a wye turnout diverge in opposite directions.
This makes ATL2056 useful anywhere a track needs to divide into two routes without favoring a conventional straight route.
Where to Use a Wye Turnout
The specialized geometry of ATL2056 makes it useful for a variety of N scale track arrangements, including:
- Railroad junctions
- Freight yards
- Engine terminals and locomotive facilities
- Staging yards
- Branching track arrangements
- Symmetrical track splits
- Compact track planning
- Components of complete turning-wye arrangements
Building a Turning Wye
ATL2056 can be used as one component when constructing a complete turning wye, an arrangement that allows locomotives or complete trains to reverse direction. However, this individual turnout is not a complete turning wye by itself; additional track and turnouts are required to construct the full three-legged arrangement.
Atlas N Scale Code 55 Track
Atlas N Scale Code 55 track is designed for model railroaders seeking fine, realistic-looking N scale trackwork. The system features fine nickel silver rail and simulated brown wood ties, providing a more prototypical appearance for detailed model railroad layouts.
The Atlas Code 55 system includes flex track, straight track, curved track, turnouts and crossings, allowing modelers to build complete track plans using compatible components throughout the layout.
Fine Code 55 Nickel Silver Rail
The Code 55 rail profile provides a finer appearance than heavier traditional N scale rail profiles. Combined with the simulated wood-tie detail, ATL2056 provides an excellent foundation for realistic ballast, weathering and surrounding trackside scenery.
