Atlas N Scale Code 80 #6 Custom-Line Right Turnout – ATL2753 is a #6 right-hand turnout designed for creating smooth diverging routes on N scale model railroad layouts. Featuring Code 80 nickel silver rail, black ties, full-length ties and a double-ended throwbar, this Atlas Custom-Line turnout is an excellent choice for mainlines, passing sidings, yard approaches, industrial tracks and other locations where reliable route selection is required.
The #6 turnout geometry provides a more gradual diverging route than tighter turnout designs, making ATL2753 especially useful where smoother trackwork is desired. Atlas Custom-Line switches are designed for operation with an Atlas Under-Table Switch Machine or compatible ground throw, allowing the turnout-control mechanism to be installed without a conventional surface-mounted switch machine alongside the track.
#6 Right-Hand Turnout
ATL2753 is a #6 right-hand turnout. When approached from the single-track end, trains can continue along the straight route or take the diverging route toward the right.
The #6 geometry provides a relatively gradual diverging route, making this turnout useful for a variety of N scale track arrangements, including:
- Mainline turnouts
- Passing sidings
- Yard entrances and approaches
- Industrial leads
- Interchange tracks
- Station tracks
- Branch-line connections
- Terminal and staging areas
What Does #6 Turnout Mean?
A numbered turnout such as a #6 is defined by the geometry of its frog and diverging route rather than by a simple sectional-track curve radius. This differs from radius-based Snap-Switch geometry.
The #6 configuration provides a more gradual divergence than tighter numbered turnouts, making it well suited to locations where smoother-looking trackwork and a broader route through the turnout are desired.
Atlas Custom-Line Design
Atlas Custom-Line switches differ from N scale switches designed around an attached surface-mounted switch machine. ATL2753 features full-length railroad ties, providing a cleaner track appearance when an under-table mechanism or ground throw is used.
This design makes the Custom-Line series particularly useful for permanent N scale layouts where the turnout mechanism will be installed beneath the layout or operated manually with a ground throw.
Double-Ended Throwbar
ATL2753 features a double-ended throwbar, allowing the turnout operating mechanism to be connected from either side of the switch.
This provides additional installation flexibility when positioning an under-table switch machine or ground throw, particularly where adjacent tracks, scenery or benchwork make one side of the turnout easier to access than the other.
Under-Table Switch Machine or Ground Throw Operation
Atlas designs its Custom N Line switches for use with the Atlas Under-Table Switch Machine or a compatible ground throw.
An under-table switch machine keeps the operating mechanism beneath the layout surface, while a ground throw provides direct manual control of the turnout at track level.
Great for Mainlines & Passing Sidings
The gradual geometry of a #6 turnout makes ATL2753 particularly useful where trains need to transition smoothly between routes. It is well suited to mainline routing, passing sidings and approaches to yards, terminals and other operating areas.
The right-hand configuration can also be incorporated into industrial and switching areas where sufficient space is available for #6 turnout geometry.
Numbered Turnout vs. Snap-Switch Geometry
ATL2753 is a numbered #6 Custom-Line turnout. It should not be confused with an Atlas Snap-Switch whose diverging route is designed around a specified sectional-track curve radius.
When designing a track plan around ATL2753, use the actual #6 turnout geometry rather than assuming that its diverging route directly substitutes for a particular radius of sectional curved track.
Turnout vs. Crossing
A turnout provides a selectable route, allowing a train to continue along the straight alignment or move onto the diverging route. A crossing instead allows two independent tracks to intersect while trains continue straight through their respective routes.
ATL2753 is therefore used wherever a railroad needs to branch from one route onto another.
Atlas N Scale Code 80 Track
ATL2753 is part of the Atlas N Scale Code 80 track system. Atlas Code 80 track features nickel silver rail and black railroad ties and includes straight track, curved track, turnouts, crossings, flex track and additional specialty components.
Code 80 refers to rail measuring approximately .080" high, providing a durable and versatile track system for N scale model railroad construction.
