Unlike a conventional left- or right-hand turnout, where one route generally continues straight while the other diverges, a wye turnout divides the incoming track into two diverging routes. What Is a Wye Turnout?

A wye turnout is a special type of railroad turnout in which the two routes diverge away from the incoming track rather than providing one straight route and one diverging route.

ATL2754 can be used as a component when constructing appropriate wye track arrangements, but the turnout itself is only one piece of the overall trackwork.

Different from Left- and Right-Hand Turnouts

Traditional left- and right-hand turnouts provide a straight route along with a route that diverges toward one side. A wye turnout instead divides the track into two diverging routes.

This makes a wye turnout particularly valuable where the railroad needs to branch in two directions without favoring a straight-through alignment.

Useful for Yards & Junctions

Wye turnouts can be incorporated into freight yards, engine facilities, junctions and other areas where multiple routes need to branch from a common track.

The symmetrical diverging arrangement can also help create compact trackwork in locations where a conventional turnout would place the straight route in an undesirable alignment.
