Atlas N Scale Code 80 #8 Custom-Line Left Turnout – ATL2755 is a broad-geometry left-hand turnout designed for smooth, realistic routing on N scale model railroad layouts. Featuring Code 80 nickel silver rail and black railroad ties, this Atlas Custom-Line #8 turnout is especially well suited to mainlines, passing sidings, crossovers, station approaches and other locations where a more gradual diverging route is desired.
Compared with tighter turnout designs, a #8 turnout provides a broader and more gradual divergence. This makes ATL2755 an excellent choice for layouts with sufficient space where smoother-looking trackwork, longer equipment and mainline-style routing are priorities.
#8 Left-Hand Turnout
ATL2755 is a #8 left-hand turnout. When approached from the single-track end, trains can continue along the primary route or take the diverging route toward the left.

What Does #8 Turnout Mean?

This broader geometry requires more layout space, but it provides a smoother-looking transition between routes and is particularly useful for mainline-oriented trackwork.
#8 vs. #6 Turnout Geometry
Both #6 and #8 turnouts can be useful for mainline and siding applications, but the #8 provides the broader and more gradual diverging route. A #6 can be a good choice where space is more limited, while a #8 is particularly useful when there is room for more generous track geometry.
For this reason, #8 turnouts are especially attractive for mainlines, passing sidings, crossovers, station approaches and other prominent track locations where smooth routing is important.
Ideal for Mainline Crossovers
ATL2755 can be incorporated into mainline crossover arrangements where trains need to transition between parallel tracks. The broader #8 geometry allows the diverging route to change alignment more gradually than tighter turnout designs.
When designing a crossover, additional compatible track and an appropriately oriented turnout are required to complete the arrangement.
Excellent for Passing Sidings
Passing sidings are another excellent application for #8 turnouts. A broad turnout at the entrance or exit of a siding can provide a more gradual transition between the main track and siding while maintaining a realistic mainline appearance.
ATL2755 can also be used for station tracks and other locations where passenger or freight trains regularly transition between parallel routes.
Great for Longer Equipment
The gradual diverging geometry of a #8 turnout can be advantageous on layouts operating long locomotives and rolling stock. Broader track geometry generally produces a more natural appearance as longer equipment moves through the diverging route.
Actual operating requirements still depend on the individual locomotive or car, so always check the manufacturer's recommended track and minimum-radius requirements for your equipment.
Custom-Line Turnout Geometry
ATL2755 is a numbered Custom-Line turnout rather than a radius-based Snap-Switch. Its diverging route should therefore be planned using the actual #8 turnout geometry instead of treating it as a direct substitute for a specific radius of sectional curved track.
This distinction is particularly important when designing precise crossovers, parallel tracks and other permanent track arrangements.
