Atlas HO Code 100 Customline Curved Turnout – Right – ATL288 is a right-hand curved turnout designed to divide an existing curved HO scale track into two separate routes. Unlike a conventional turnout that typically approaches from straight track, a curved turnout allows the route to divide within curved trackwork, making it especially useful where a siding, secondary route, yard lead or branch needs to begin within a curve.
Part of the Atlas HO Code 100 Customline track system, ATL288 features solid nickel silver Code 100 rail with black injection-molded plastic ties. Its specialized curved configuration gives model railroaders additional flexibility when designing complex track arrangements where a conventional straight turnout may not fit efficiently.
What Is a Curved Turnout?
A curved turnout performs the same basic routing function as a conventional turnout, but its geometry is designed to fit into curved trackwork. Instead of requiring the railroad to straighten before reaching the switch, the track can divide while continuing through the curve.
This allows a train traveling through a curve to be routed onto one of two paths and can make much better use of available layout space in certain track plans.
Why Use a Curved Turnout?
Curved turnouts are particularly useful when the desired location for a siding, junction or secondary route falls within a curve. Without a curved turnout, the modeler may need to complete the curve, add straight track and then install a conventional turnout, requiring considerably more layout space.
By allowing the routes to divide within the curve itself, ATL288 can be useful for passing sidings, yard entrances, industrial leads, station approaches, branch lines and other complex track arrangements.

ATL288 is the right-hand version of the Atlas HO Code 100 Customline curved turnout. The right-hand configuration distinguishes it from the corresponding ATL287 left-hand curved turnout and gives layout designers the ability to select the orientation that matches their particular track plan.

Curved vs. Conventional Turnouts
A conventional left- or right-hand turnout is generally used where a route branches from relatively straight track. A curved turnout is useful where the routes need to divide while the track is already curving.
This can make curved turnouts valuable problem-solving components when designing an HO scale layout. They allow track plans to use available space more efficiently while providing routing possibilities that might otherwise require additional straight track and a conventional turnout.

Plan Curved Turnout Installations Carefully
