Atlas HO Code 100 Customline Mark V Wye Turnout – ATL390 is a specialized HO scale turnout that divides a single incoming track into two diverging routes. Unlike a conventional left- or right-hand turnout where one route continues generally straight, a wye turnout provides a balanced branching arrangement that is especially useful for wyes, junctions, branch lines, yard approaches and other track plans requiring two diverging routes.
Part of the Atlas 390 Series Customline Mark V turnout family, ATL390 combines the proven Atlas HO Code 100 track system with updated detailing and electrical features. It features nickel silver Code 100 rail, black ties, cast-metal points, a blackened metal frog and a convenient frog contact lug. The Mark V design is also DCC friendly and compatible with the previous Atlas 280 Series Mark IV turnout system.
What Is a Wye Turnout?
A wye turnout differs from a conventional left- or right-hand turnout because neither route simply continues straight through the switch. Instead, the two routes diverge away from the incoming track in opposite directions.
This balanced geometry makes a wye turnout particularly useful where a railroad needs to split one track into two routes without favoring a straight route. It can also be an important component when constructing a complete wye track arrangement used to turn locomotives, cars or entire trains.
Common Uses for an HO Scale Wye Turnout
- Wye track arrangements for turning trains or locomotives
- Branch-line junctions
- Route splits and junctions
- Yard entrances and approaches
- Locomotive facilities
- Industrial railroad track arrangements
- Compact track plans where two diverging routes are required
- Locations where neither route needs to continue straight
Atlas Customline Mark V Design
The Atlas Customline Mark V 390 Series updates the company's established Code 100 turnout system with improved appearance and electrical features. The turnout uses rivetless switch points, cast-metal points and frog, separately molded guardrails and realistic scale-sized detailing.
The guardrails and scale-sized throwbar are molded in a dark color to better represent the appearance of prototype metal components, while scale-sized molded spike heads further improve the appearance of the track.
DCC-Friendly Turnout Construction
The Atlas Mark V turnout is designed with DCC-friendly construction, making it suitable for layouts using Digital Command Control as well as appropriately wired conventional model railroad control systems.
The improved rivetless switch-point design also provides reliable electrical conductivity while contributing to a cleaner, more realistic appearance.
Powerable Metal Frog
ATL390 features a blackened cast-metal frog that can be electrically powered when desired. Atlas includes a dedicated frog contact lug, making it easier to connect frog power without having to solder directly to the underside of the turnout.
Powering the frog can help maintain electrical pickup as locomotives travel through the turnout, particularly with short-wheelbase locomotives or equipment with limited electrical pickup. The exact wiring arrangement will depend on the layout's electrical and turnout-control system.

Mark V Compatibility with Older Atlas Turnouts
Atlas designed its newer 390 Series Mark V turnouts to be 100% compatible with the existing 280 Series Mark IV turnout system. This allows model railroaders with established Atlas Code 100 trackwork to upgrade to the newer Mark V design while maintaining compatible surrounding track geometry.
Manual or Powered Turnout Operation
The points on the Mark V turnout can be operated using compatible Atlas turnout-control components. Atlas lists compatibility with its under-table switch machines, standard Code 100 remote switch machines and standard Code 100 manual switch machines.

Build Wyes, Junctions & Branching Routes
A wye turnout can be particularly useful when designing a railroad junction where a single route needs to split into two directions. When incorporated into a complete wye track arrangement, the turnout can also become part of a track configuration that allows locomotives, rolling stock or trains to be turned around.
Remember that a complete railroad wye involves additional trackwork and turnouts beyond this individual component. The ATL390 is the wye-style turnout itself, not a complete wye track set.
