Atlas HO Code 100 #4 Customline Mark V Turnout – Right – ATL392 is a compact right-hand turnout designed for HO scale yards, industrial sidings, switching areas and other track arrangements where space-efficient routing is important. Its #4 turnout geometry creates a tighter diverging route than broader #6 or #8 turnouts, allowing model railroaders to fit switches and branching tracks into smaller spaces.
Part of the Atlas HO Code 100 track system, ATL392 features solid nickel silver Code 100 rail with black injection-molded plastic ties. The Custom-Line design also incorporates a metal frog that can be electrically powered when desired.
What Does #4 Turnout Mean?
The #4 designation refers to the turnout's frog geometry. In simplified terms, a #4 frog spreads approximately one unit sideways for every four units traveled forward through the frog area.
Compared with a higher-number turnout such as a #6 or #8, a #4 turnout changes direction more quickly and requires less overall layout space. This makes #4 geometry especially useful for yards, industrial switching areas, locomotive facilities, storage tracks and compact sidings.
Right-Hand Turnout
ATL392 is a right-hand turnout. When approaching the turnout from the single-track or point end, the straight route continues ahead while the diverging route branches toward the right.
This makes ATL392 the right-hand counterpart to the ATL391 left-hand #4 Mark V turnout, allowing model railroaders to create branching routes in either direction.
Atlas Customline Mark V Design
The Atlas Mark V turnout continues the company's established HO Code 100 Custom-Line system while providing a modern turnout option for new layouts and existing Atlas Code 100 trackwork.
Its metal frog can be powered if necessary, providing model railroaders with the option of supplying electrical power through the frog when their layout wiring and operating requirements call for it.
Powerable Metal Frog
The frog is the portion of a turnout where the rails of the two routes intersect. Atlas uses a metal frog on its Code 100 Custom-Line turnout, and the frog can be electrically powered when desired.
A powered frog can help maintain electrical pickup as locomotives travel through the turnout, which can be particularly useful for locomotives with shorter wheelbases or limited electrical pickup. The exact wiring arrangement will depend on the layout's electrical and turnout-control system.

Ideal for Yards, Sidings & Industrial Track
The relatively compact #4 geometry makes ATL392 particularly useful when the goal is to fit more operational track into a limited area. It can be used for yard ladders, industrial spurs, locomotive facilities, storage tracks and compact passing sidings.
For visible mainlines or routes regularly handling longer locomotives and rolling stock, broader #6 or #8 turnout geometry may be preferable when sufficient space is available.
#4 Customline Turnout vs. Atlas Snap-Switch
An Atlas #4 Customline turnout and an Atlas Snap-Switch are not the same track component. Although both can be used to create branching routes, their geometry differs, and Atlas specifically notes that they are not interchangeable in Atlas layout plans.
If you are building from an existing Atlas track plan, make sure the plan specifically calls for a #4 Customline turnout before substituting ATL392 for another type of switch.
Plan & Test Your Turnout Installation
Because #4 turnout geometry is relatively compact, always consider the operating requirements of your locomotives and rolling stock. Longer locomotives, passenger cars and other large equipment may perform better through broader turnout geometry.
Test your intended equipment through both the straight and diverging routes before permanently securing, ballasting or weathering the turnout.
