Atlas HO Code 100 #6 Customline Mark V Turnout – Left – ATL393 is a left-hand HO scale turnout featuring broader #6 switching geometry for mainlines, passing sidings, crossovers, yard approaches and other locations where a smoother diverging route is preferred. Compared with a tighter #4 turnout, the #6 geometry provides a more gradual transition while remaining practical for a wide range of HO scale layouts.
Part of the Atlas HO Code 100 track system, ATL393 features solid nickel silver Code 100 rail with black injection-molded plastic ties. The Atlas Custom-Line design also incorporates a metal frog that can be electrically powered when necessary.
What Does #6 Turnout Mean?
The #6 designation refers to the turnout's frog geometry. In simplified terms, a #6 frog diverges approximately one unit sideways for every six units traveled forward through the frog area.
This produces a more gradual diverging route than a #4 turnout while requiring less space than a broader #8. For many HO scale layouts, #6 turnouts provide an excellent balance between smooth operating geometry and reasonable space requirements.
Left-Hand Turnout
ATL393 is a left-hand turnout. When approaching the turnout from the single-track or point end, the straight route continues ahead while the diverging route branches toward the left.
This configuration can be used to create passing sidings, crossovers, yard leads, industrial tracks and other routes that need to branch toward the left.

Powerable Metal Frog
The frog is the portion of the turnout where the rails of the two routes intersect. Atlas uses a metal frog on its HO Code 100 Custom-Line turnout, and the frog can be electrically powered when necessary.
Powering the frog can help maintain electrical pickup through the turnout, particularly for locomotives with shorter wheelbases or limited electrical pickup. The appropriate wiring arrangement depends on the layout's electrical and turnout-control system.

#6 vs. #4 & #8 Turnouts
Turnout number has a major effect on the amount of space required and how gradually the diverging route changes direction. A #4 turnout provides tighter geometry that can be useful in compact yards and industrial switching areas, while a #8 turnout provides a much broader route that is particularly attractive for mainline trackwork where sufficient space is available.
The #6 turnout sits between the two, making it an excellent general-purpose option. It provides broader geometry than a #4 without requiring the additional length and space of a #8.
Build Passing Sidings & Crossovers
#6 turnouts are particularly useful for constructing passing sidings and crossovers. Left- and right-hand #6 turnouts can be incorporated into parallel-track arrangements to allow trains to move between routes or enter and leave a siding.
Carefully plan track centers and surrounding geometry when constructing crossovers, and test your intended locomotives and rolling stock through both turnout routes before permanently securing and ballasting the track.
