Atlas HO Code 100 #6 Customline Mark V Turnout – Right – ATL394 is a right-hand HO scale turnout featuring versatile #6 switching geometry for mainlines, passing sidings, crossovers, yard approaches and other locations where a smoother diverging route is preferred. The #6 geometry provides a more gradual route than a compact #4 turnout while requiring less space than a broad #8, making it an excellent general-purpose turnout size for many HO scale layouts.
Part of the Atlas HO Code 100 Customline Mark V system, ATL394 features nickel silver Code 100 rail, black plastic ties, cast-metal turnout points and a metal frog with a convenient power lug. The frog can be electrically powered when desired, providing additional flexibility when wiring the turnout for reliable locomotive operation.
What Does #6 Turnout Mean?
The #6 designation refers to the turnout's frog geometry. In simplified terms, a #6 frog diverges approximately one unit sideways for every six units traveled forward through the frog area.
This creates a more gradual diverging route than a #4 turnout. For many HO scale layouts, #6 turnouts provide an excellent balance between smooth operating geometry and reasonable space requirements, making them useful in both mainline and switching applications.
Right-Hand Turnout
ATL394 is a right-hand turnout. When approaching the turnout from the single-track or point end, the straight route continues ahead while the diverging route branches toward the right.
This makes ATL394 the right-hand counterpart to the ATL393 left-hand #6 Mark V turnout. Left- and right-hand versions can be used throughout a layout to create sidings, junctions, yard entrances, crossovers and other branching track arrangements.
Atlas Customline Mark V Design
The Atlas Customline Mark V design combines traditional Code 100 track compatibility with improved detailing and electrical features. The turnout includes cast-metal points and a metal frog, along with a conveniently located frog power lug that eliminates the need to solder directly underneath the turnout when the modeler chooses to power the frog.
A scale-sized throwbar, separately molded frog guardrails and scale-sized molded spike heads further improve the appearance of the turnout while maintaining the durability expected from the Atlas Code 100 track system.
Powerable Metal Frog
The frog is the portion of a turnout where the rails of the two routes intersect. ATL394 uses a metal frog that can be electrically powered when desired.
Atlas provides a conveniently positioned frog power lug, making it easier to connect the necessary wiring without soldering directly to the underside of the turnout. Powering the frog can help maintain electrical pickup through the switch, particularly for locomotives with short wheelbases or limited electrical pickup.
Why Choose a #6 Turnout?
A #6 turnout is one of the most versatile choices for an HO scale railroad. It provides broader geometry than a #4 while remaining considerably more compact than a #8 turnout.
This makes #6 geometry well suited for mainlines, passing sidings, crossovers, yard approaches, arrival and departure tracks, industrial leads and passenger terminal approaches. It is also a useful choice when longer locomotives and rolling stock benefit from smoother turnout geometry but available layout space does not permit a #8.

#6 vs. #4 & #8 Turnouts
A #4 turnout changes direction more quickly and occupies less space, making it useful for compact yards, industrial switching districts and other space-constrained areas.
A #8 turnout provides much broader geometry and is particularly useful for mainline trackwork where sufficient space is available. The #6 falls between the two, providing a practical combination of broad operating geometry and manageable overall size.
Always consider the operating requirements of your locomotives and rolling stock when selecting turnout geometry, particularly when operating long passenger cars, large locomotives or other equipment with minimum track-radius requirements.
Ideal for Passing Sidings & Crossovers
#6 turnouts are particularly useful for constructing passing sidings and crossovers. Left- and right-hand #6 turnouts can be incorporated into parallel-track arrangements to allow trains to enter a siding or move between adjacent tracks.
They can also be used at yard entrances, branch-line junctions and other locations where a train needs to transition smoothly between routes.
Manual or Remote Turnout Operation

Important: Customline vs. Snap-Switch Geometry
Atlas Code 100 Customline turnouts and Atlas Snap-Switches are not interchangeable components in Atlas track plans. Their track geometry differs, so a track plan calling specifically for a Customline #6 turnout should use the appropriate Customline turnout rather than substituting a Snap-Switch.
