Atlas HO Code 83 True-Track Remote Right Snap-Switch Turnout – ATL481 provides a right-hand diverging route with convenient remote electrical control for Atlas True-Track HO scale layouts. This turnout features an attached remote-control switch machine, allowing the operator to change the route electrically from a layout control panel rather than manually throwing the turnout at the track.
Designed as part of the Atlas HO Code 83 True-Track system, ATL481 combines nickel silver rail and brown ties with integrated gray graveled roadbed. It is ideal for adding remotely controlled sidings, industrial spurs, yard tracks, passing tracks and other diverging routes to an HO scale True-Track layout.

What Does a Right-Hand Turnout Do?
A turnout allows one track to divide into two possible routes. On this right-hand Snap-Switch, the diverging route branches toward the right when viewed from the single-track approach or point end of the turnout.
The movable points determine which route the train follows. One position directs locomotives and rolling stock along the straight route, while the other sends them onto the right-hand diverging route.
Remote-Control Switch Machine
The defining feature of ATL481 is its attached remote-control switch machine. Once properly wired, the turnout can be electrically thrown from a layout control panel, allowing the operator to change routes without physically reaching the turnout.
This makes remote operation particularly convenient for turnouts located farther from the edge of the layout, inside yards and operating areas, or anywhere centralized turnout control is preferred.
Remote vs. Manual Snap-Switches
Atlas offers both manual and remote True-Track Snap-Switches. A manual turnout is physically thrown by hand at the track, while ATL481 provides remote electrical operation.
Both versions perform the same basic job of directing trains between straight and diverging routes. The remote version adds the convenience of controlling the turnout from another location on the layout.
Where Can a Remote Right Snap-Switch Be Used?
ATL481 can be used anywhere a right-hand diverging route is needed, including:
- Industrial sidings and spurs
- Freight yard tracks
- Passing sidings
- Storage tracks
- Locomotive and engine facility tracks
- Passenger station tracks
- Staging areas
- Branching routes
- Locations where the turnout is difficult to reach manually
Build Sidings & Branching Routes
A single right-hand turnout can significantly expand the operating possibilities of a model railroad. Connecting additional True-Track sections to the diverging route allows ATL481 to create an industrial spur, storage siding, yard track or another operating route.
Multiple left- and right-hand True-Track Snap-Switches can be combined to construct passing sidings, freight yards, staging tracks, industrial switching areas and more complex track arrangements.
Snap-Switch vs. Numbered Turnouts
An Atlas Snap-Switch is designed around sectional-track geometry, making it particularly useful when building layouts with Atlas True-Track straight and curved sections. This differs from numbered Custom-Line turnouts such as #4, #6 and #8 turnouts, which use frog-number geometry.
For layouts built primarily with Atlas True-Track sectional components, Snap-Switches provide a straightforward way to introduce diverging routes while remaining within the True-Track system.
Why Choose Remote Turnout Control?
Remote turnout control allows the operator to manage track routes from a convenient location instead of reaching across the railroad whenever a switch needs to be changed. This can make operation easier and allows turnouts to be placed in areas where direct manual access may be inconvenient.
Remote operation is particularly useful for:
- Permanent HO scale layouts
- Centralized control panels
- Turnouts located farther from the layout edge
- Yard and staging operations
- Passing sidings
- Layouts with multiple controlled routes
Atlas HO Code 83 True-Track
Atlas True-Track combines Code 83 nickel silver rail and brown ties with integrated gray graveled roadbed. The roadbed features correctly angled shoulders for a realistic track-and-ballast appearance while retaining the convenience of an easy-to-assemble sectional track system.
True-Track components can be combined to build everything from simple continuous-running layouts to more advanced railroads featuring sidings, yards, industrial tracks and multiple operating routes.
Removable Code 83 Track
Atlas HO True-Track incorporates Code 83 Snap-Track that can be removed from the molded roadbed and used separately if desired. This provides additional flexibility if the track is later incorporated into a permanent layout using a different roadbed or scenery system.
