Atlas HO Code 83 True-Track 22" Radius Remote Left Snap-Switch Turnout – ATL484 adds a remotely controlled left-hand diverging route to an Atlas True-Track HO scale layout while maintaining 22" radius sectional-track geometry. The attached remote switch machine allows the turnout to be electrically operated from a control panel rather than requiring the operator to throw the switch by hand at the track.
ATL484 is part of the Atlas HO Code 83 True-Track system, combining nickel silver rail with realistic brown ties and integrated gray graveled roadbed. Its broader 22" radius geometry makes this turnout particularly useful for layouts built around Atlas 22" radius True-Track curves, including mainline-to-siding connections, passing tracks, yards and industrial routes.

What Does a Left-Hand Snap-Switch Do?
A turnout allows one track to divide into two possible routes. On this left-hand Snap-Switch, the diverging route branches toward the left when viewed from the single-track approach or point end of the turnout.
The movable turnout points determine which route a train follows. One position keeps locomotives and rolling stock on the straight route, while the other directs them onto the left-hand diverging route.
22" Radius Diverging Geometry
The 22" radius is an important part of ATL484's geometry. This version is specifically designed around a broader 22" radius diverging route, making it a natural choice for True-Track layouts using Atlas 22" radius curved track.
The broader geometry creates a more gradual diverging route than tighter sectional-track arrangements and can provide a more natural appearance as locomotives and rolling stock travel through the turnout.
Remote Electrical Turnout Control
ATL484 features a remote switch machine for electrical turnout operation. Once properly wired, the operator can change the turnout's route from a convenient control location instead of physically reaching the turnout each time the route needs to be changed.
This makes remote operation especially useful for permanent layouts, turnouts located farther from the edge of the railroad, yard entrances, passing sidings and other areas where centralized route control is preferred.
Remote vs. Manual 22" Radius Snap-Switches
The manual and remote versions perform the same basic function of directing trains between straight and diverging routes. The major difference is how the turnout is operated.
A manual Snap-Switch is changed by hand at the track, while ATL484 provides remote electrical operation. The remote version is a convenient choice when the turnout is difficult to reach or when the modeler wants to control multiple routes from an operating position or control panel.
Where Can a 22" Radius Remote Left Snap-Switch Be Used?
ATL484 can be used anywhere a left-hand diverging route is required within a compatible Atlas True-Track layout. Common applications include:
- Mainline-to-siding connections
- Passing sidings
- Industrial sidings and spurs
- Freight yard entrances
- Storage tracks
- Locomotive and engine facility tracks
- Passenger station tracks
- Staging areas
- Branching routes
- Turnouts located beyond comfortable manual reach
- Layouts using 22" radius True-Track curves
Build Around 22" Radius True-Track
For layouts already using 22" radius Atlas True-Track curved sections, ATL484 provides a turnout designed around the same broader-radius sectional-track geometry. This makes it easier to introduce sidings and branching routes while maintaining consistent geometry throughout the track plan.
Atlas also offers standard and fractional 22" radius True-Track curved sections, giving modelers additional options for adjusting track alignment around turnouts, sidings and other complex track arrangements.
Snap-Switch vs. Numbered Turnouts
An Atlas Snap-Switch is designed around sectional-track radius geometry. ATL484 is specifically identified as a 22" radius Snap-Switch. This differs from numbered turnouts such as #4, #6 and #8, which are defined by frog-number geometry rather than a sectional-track curve radius.
This distinction is useful when planning a layout. A 22" radius Snap-Switch is designed to integrate naturally into a fixed sectional-track system such as Atlas True-Track, while numbered turnouts are generally selected according to frog geometry and the requirements of a more customized track arrangement.
Build Passing Sidings & Operating Routes
Adding ATL484 can significantly expand the operating possibilities of a True-Track railroad. The diverging route can lead into an industrial spur, storage siding, yard track, passing siding or another destination.
Combining left- and right-hand 22" radius Snap-Switches provides even greater flexibility, allowing modelers to build passing sidings, yard entrances and other multi-route track arrangements while retaining broader 22" radius geometry.
Why Choose Remote Turnout Control?
Remote operation allows the modeler to manage track routes without physically reaching every turnout. This can make train operation more convenient and becomes increasingly useful as a layout grows in size and complexity.
Remote turnout control is especially useful for:
- Permanent HO scale layouts
- Centralized control panels
- Passing sidings
- Freight yards and staging areas
- Turnouts located farther from the layout edge
- Layouts with multiple controlled routes
Check Your Equipment's Minimum Radius
Although 22" radius geometry is broader than many compact HO sectional-track arrangements, locomotive and rolling stock requirements vary. Always check the equipment manufacturer's recommended minimum radius, particularly when operating long passenger cars, large locomotives or other long-wheelbase equipment.
Atlas HO Code 83 True-Track
Atlas True-Track combines Code 83 nickel silver rail with realistic brown ties and integrated gray graveled roadbed. The roadbed features correctly angled shoulders for a realistic track-and-ballast appearance while retaining the convenience of an easy-to-assemble sectional track system.
True-Track can be used for beginner layouts, temporary setups, portable railroads and permanent HO scale model railroads. Straight track, curved track, turnouts and crossings can be combined to create everything from a simple continuous-running railroad to layouts featuring sidings, yards and multiple operating routes.
