Atlas HO Code 100 Remote Switch Machine – Left – ATL52 is a snap-on electrical turnout-control mechanism designed for compatible Atlas HO Code 100 Snap-Switches. It allows a manually controlled compatible switch to be converted to remote operation so the turnout can be thrown electrically from a layout control panel instead of directly at the track.
ATL52 is the left-hand version of the Atlas Remote Switch Machine. Its snap-on design provides a convenient option for adding powered turnout control to existing Atlas Code 100 trackwork without replacing the complete turnout.
What Does a Remote Switch Machine Do?
A switch machine moves the points of a model railroad turnout to select which track route a train will follow. With a remote switch machine, this movement is performed electrically rather than by manually moving a lever alongside the track.
Once properly installed and wired, ATL52 allows the operator to throw the compatible switch from a control location away from the turnout itself. This is particularly useful for larger layouts, switches farther from the layout edge and locations where centralized turnout control is preferred.
Converts Compatible Snap-Switches to Remote Control
Atlas designed its snap-on remote switch machines to quickly and easily convert compatible Atlas Code 100 HO switches to remote control. Rather than replacing an existing compatible turnout simply because remote operation is desired, the appropriate switch machine can be installed on the turnout.
This makes ATL52 useful both when initially building a layout and when upgrading existing manually operated Atlas Code 100 trackwork.
Left-Hand Configuration
ATL52 is specifically the left-hand remote switch machine. The orientation of a surface-mounted switch machine matters because the mechanism must align correctly with the turnout points and mounting arrangement.
Before ordering a replacement or conversion switch machine, verify that the left-hand ATL52 configuration matches the Atlas switch being equipped.
Remote Control from Your Layout Panel
Once the switch machine is properly installed and wired with an appropriate control system, the turnout can be thrown remotely from a layout control panel. This allows the operator to change the selected track route without physically reaching the switch.
Remote turnout operation can be especially convenient for passing sidings, yards, industrial tracks and other areas where multiple switches need to be controlled during an operating session.

Remote vs. Manual Switch Machines
A manual switch machine requires the operator to physically move a lever at the turnout. A remote switch machine provides electrical operation so the route can be changed from a separate control location.
Manual operation can be convenient for easily accessible trackwork, while remote control is often preferable for switches farther from the layout edge or layouts where the operator wants centralized control of multiple turnouts.
Switch Machine Only – Turnout Not Included
ATL52 is the remote switch machine itself, not a complete track turnout. It is intended for use with a compatible Atlas HO Code 100 switch and should not be confused with Atlas products that package a complete Snap-Switch with a remote switch machine already attached.
If you need the complete track switch rather than a replacement or conversion mechanism, browse our Atlas HO Code 100 turnout selection for complete Snap-Switches and Customline turnouts.
Ideal for Layout Upgrades & Replacement
Separate switch machines make it possible to upgrade or maintain Atlas trackwork without replacing an otherwise usable switch. ATL52 can be used when converting compatible manual trackwork to remote operation or when replacing a compatible existing switch machine.
This can be especially useful on established layouts where the surrounding track has already been installed, aligned and scenicked.
