Atlas HO Code 83 18" Radius Curved Track – 6-Pack – ATL532 includes six fixed-radius curved track sections for building HO scale curves, ovals and sectional-track layouts. Each section maintains a standard 18" radius, providing predictable geometry that makes it easy to design and expand an Atlas Code 83 track system.

Atlas specifies 12 sections to form a complete 18" radius circle. Since a complete circle is 360°, each section represents 30° of curvature. The six sections included in ATL532 therefore provide 180° of curve, or one complete semicircle.

This straightforward geometry makes ATL532 an excellent building block for HO sectional-track layouts. One package provides enough curved track for one 180° end of an oval, while two packages provide the 12 sections required for a complete circle.

What Does 18" Radius Mean?

The 18" radius describes the distance from the theoretical center of the curve to the track centerline. It does not mean each individual track section is 18" long.

A complete 18" radius circle measures approximately 36" in diameter at the track centerline. Additional clearance should be allowed beyond the track for roadbed, scenery and the outward overhang of locomotives and rolling stock.

A Common Radius for HO Scale Layouts

An 18" radius is a popular sectional-track size for compact and medium-size HO layouts. It provides a broader curve than 15" radius track while still allowing a continuous-running railroad to fit into a relatively manageable space.

18" radius curves are useful for:

One Package Makes a 180° Curve

Each ATL532 section provides 30° of curvature. Connecting all six pieces from one package creates a complete 180° semicircle.

This makes planning a basic oval especially simple. Two packages provide the curved track needed for both 180° ends of the oval, while straight sections can be added between them to determine the overall length of the layout.

Check Your Equipment's Minimum Radius

Although 18" radius track accommodates more HO equipment than tighter 15" radius curves, minimum-radius requirements vary considerably between locomotives and rolling stock. Longer locomotives, full-length passenger cars and some modern freight equipment may require curves broader than 18" for reliable operation.

Always check the manufacturer's recommended minimum radius for the equipment you plan to operate before designing a layout around 18" radius curves.

18" Radius vs. 15" Radius Track

Compared with 15" radius track, an 18" radius provides a broader and more gradual curve. The larger radius generally improves the appearance of equipment negotiating the curve and can accommodate a wider range of locomotives and rolling stock.

The tradeoff is space. A complete 18" radius circle requires approximately 36" across at the track centerline, compared with approximately 30" for a 15" radius circle. Additional clearance should be included when planning the actual layout footprint.
