Atlas HO Code 83 1/2 18" Radius Curved Track – 4-Pack – ATL533 includes four short curved sectional-track pieces designed for making precise adjustments to 18" radius HO scale trackwork. Each piece maintains a true 18" radius while providing half the curvature of a standard Atlas 18" radius section.

1/2 18" Radius does not mean a 9" radius curve. The "1/2" designation refers to the fractional length and angular geometry of the track section. ATL533 follows the same 18" radius as standard Atlas 18" radius curved track, making it useful when a full curved section changes direction farther than the track plan requires.

1/2 18" Radius Track Geometry

A standard Atlas 18" radius curved track section represents 30° of curvature, with 12 standard sections forming a complete 360° circle. Because ATL533 is a half section, each piece provides 15° of curvature while maintaining the same 18" radius.

Why Use a 1/2 18" Radius Section?

Fractional curved track allows modelers to make smaller directional changes while preserving a consistent curve radius. When a standard 30° 18" radius section turns the track too far, ATL533 provides a smaller 15° adjustment without changing the radius.

Same 18" Radius – Half the Curve

ATL533 follows the same 18" radius as a standard Atlas 18" radius curved section. The difference is simply how far each individual piece travels around the curve.

A standard section changes the track direction by 30°, while each ATL533 section changes it by only 15°. Connecting two ATL533 sections together therefore produces the same 30° curvature as one standard 18" radius section.

Not a 9" Radius Curve

The fractional designation does not divide the actual radius in half. Locomotives and rolling stock still travel through a true 18" radius curve. The "1/2" designation refers only to the shorter section and its reduced angular change.

This allows modelers to maintain consistent 18" radius geometry while building the curve in smaller increments.

Useful for Precise Sectional Track Geometry

Turnouts, crossings, sidings and other fixed track components can create situations where a standard curved section changes direction farther than necessary. ATL533 works as a curved geometry adjustment section, allowing the track direction to be changed by only 15° at a time.

This can be especially helpful when fitting sectional track into an existing layout or connecting several fixed-geometry components without cutting track.

18" Radius Equipment Compatibility

Because ATL533 maintains a true 18" radius, equipment operating through these sections encounters the same curve radius as it would on standard Atlas 18" radius track. The half-section designation does not make the curve tighter.

Minimum-radius requirements vary between locomotives and rolling stock, so always check the equipment manufacturer's recommended minimum radius before planning a layout around 18" radius curves.
