Atlas HO Code 83 1/3 18" Radius Curved Track – 4-Pack – ATL534 includes four short curved sectional-track pieces designed for making precise adjustments to 18" radius HO scale trackwork. Each piece maintains the same 18" radius as Atlas standard 18" radius curved track, but provides only one-third of the standard section's curvature.

This is an important distinction: 1/3 18" Radius does not mean a 6" radius curve. These pieces remain on an 18" radius. The "1/3" refers to the shorter section of the curve, making ATL534 particularly useful for fine-tuning sectional-track geometry.

1/3 18" Radius Track Geometry

Atlas specifies that 12 standard 18" radius sections form a complete circle. A complete circle is 360°, so each standard 18" radius section represents 30° of curvature. A 1/3 section therefore represents approximately 10° of curvature while maintaining the same 18" radius.

Why Use a 1/3 Radius Section?

Fractional curved sections are essentially geometry-adjustment pieces. A full-size curved section may turn the track farther than needed, particularly around turnouts, sidings, crossings and other fixed track components.

ATL534 provides a much smaller change in direction while maintaining the same 18" radius, allowing modelers to fine-tune a track arrangement without cutting and modifying a standard curved section.

Same 18" Radius – Shorter Curve

The easiest way to understand ATL534 is to compare it with a standard Atlas 18" radius section. Both pieces follow the same 18" radius circle, so their curvature is equally tight. The difference is simply how far around that circle each piece travels.

A standard section covers approximately 30°. The ATL534 1/3 section covers approximately 10°. Three 1/3 sections placed together therefore provide approximately the same amount of curvature as one standard 18" radius section.

Not a 6" Radius Curve

The "1/3" designation can easily be misunderstood as one-third of the radius. That is not what it means. ATL534 does not reduce the 18" radius to 6".

The track remains an 18" radius curve, which means equipment operating through it experiences the same curve radius as it would on standard Atlas 18" radius sectional track.

Check Equipment Minimum Radius

Because these sections maintain a true 18" radius, equipment should have the same radius compatibility as it would on standard 18" radius Atlas track. Longer locomotives, full-length passenger cars and some modern rolling stock may require broader curves.

Always check the manufacturer's recommended minimum radius for your locomotives and rolling stock when planning an HO scale layout.

Combine with Standard 18" Radius Track

ATL534 is particularly useful when combined with standard Atlas 18" radius curved track. Full sections can handle the majority of a curve, while these shorter 1/3 sections provide the smaller angular adjustments needed to complete more complicated track arrangements.
