Atlas HO Code 83 22" Radius Curved Track – 6-Pack – ATL535 includes six fixed-radius curved track sections for building broader, more gradual curves on HO scale model railroad layouts. Each section maintains a 22" radius, providing predictable sectional-track geometry for mainlines, ovals, passing sidings and other curved track arrangements.

Atlas specifies that 16 sections form a complete 22" radius circle. Since a full circle is 360°, each section provides 22.5° of curvature. The six sections included in one ATL535 package therefore provide a total of 135° of curved track.

Because Atlas uses 16 sections for a complete circle, the geometry is different from its 15" and 18" radius sectional curves. One 6-pack does not create a complete semicircle; eight sections are required for 180°.

What Does 22" Radius Mean?

The 22" radius is measured from the theoretical center of the curve to the track centerline. It does not mean each individual track section is 22" long.

A complete 22" radius circle measures approximately 44" in diameter at the track centerline. When planning the layout, additional clearance should be allowed outside the track for roadbed, scenery and locomotive or rolling-stock overhang.

Broader Curves for HO Scale Railroads

Compared with tighter 15" and 18" radius sectional track, a 22" radius creates a broader and more gradual curve. This can improve the appearance of trains as they travel through curves and can provide greater compatibility with longer locomotives and rolling stock.

22" radius curves are useful for:

How Many Sections Do You Need?

Each ATL535 section covers 22.5°. Eight sections are therefore required to create a 180° semicircle, while 16 sections create a complete 360° circle.

Since each package contains six sections, two packages provide 12 sections, which is not enough for a complete circle. Starting from zero track, three packages provide enough sections to build a full 16-piece circle with two sections remaining for another part of the layout.

22" Radius vs. 18" Radius Track

A 22" radius requires more layout space than an 18" radius, but the broader curvature provides several advantages. Trains generally have a more realistic appearance on broader curves, and longer locomotives and rolling stock may operate more comfortably.

The tradeoff is footprint. An 18" radius circle measures approximately 36" across at the track centerline, while a 22" radius circle measures approximately 44" across. Always allow additional space beyond the calculated diameter for track clearance and scenery.

Check Equipment Minimum Radius

A 22" radius accommodates a wider range of HO scale equipment than tighter curves, but minimum-radius requirements still vary by model. Some particularly long locomotives, passenger cars or specialized rolling stock may require an even broader curve.

Always check the manufacturer's recommended minimum radius for the locomotives and rolling stock you plan to operate.
