Atlas HO Code 83 24" Radius Curved Track – 6-Pack – ATL536 includes six fixed-radius curved track sections for building broad, gradual curves on HO scale model railroad layouts. Each section maintains a 24" radius, making this track an excellent choice for mainlines, larger ovals, passenger operations and layouts designed to accommodate longer locomotives and rolling stock.
Atlas specifies that 16 sections form a complete 24" radius circle. Since a full circle is 360°, each section provides 22.5° of curvature. The six sections included in one ATL536 package therefore provide a total of 135° of curved track.
24" Radius Curved Track Geometry
- Radius: 24"
- Curve per section: 22.5°
- Sections per package: 6
- Total curve per package: 135°
- Sections required for a 180° semicircle: 8
- Sections required for a complete 360° circle: 16
Because Atlas uses 16 sections for a complete circle, one 6-pack does not create a complete semicircle. Eight sections are required for 180°, while 16 sections are required for a complete circle.
What Does 24" Radius Mean?
The 24" radius is measured from the theoretical center of the curve to the track centerline. It does not mean each individual track section is 24" long.
A complete 24" radius circle measures approximately 48" in diameter at the track centerline. Additional space should be allowed outside the track for roadbed, scenery and the overhang of locomotives and rolling stock.
Broad Curves for HO Scale Railroads
A 24" radius provides a broader and more gradual curve than Atlas 15", 18" and 22" radius sectional track. Broader curves can improve the appearance of trains as they travel around the layout and are particularly useful when operating longer equipment.
24" radius curves are well suited for:
- Mainline curves
- Large continuous-running layouts
- Passenger train operations
- Long freight cars
- Modern locomotives
- Broad oval track plans
- Passing sidings
- Station approaches
- Layouts where smoother-looking curvature is desired
How Many Sections Do You Need?
Each ATL536 curved section covers 22.5°. Eight sections create a 180° semicircle, while 16 sections create a complete 360° circle.
Since each package contains six sections, two packages provide 12 sections and are not enough for a complete circle. Starting from zero track, three packages provide 18 sections, enough to build a complete 16-piece circle with two curved sections remaining.
24" Radius vs. 22" Radius Track
Atlas 22" and 24" radius curved track use the same 22.5° sectional geometry, with 16 sections required for a complete circle. The difference is the radius itself. The 24" radius pushes the track farther from the center of the curve, producing a broader overall arc.
A complete 22" radius circle measures approximately 44" across at the track centerline, while a 24" radius circle measures approximately 48". The additional space can provide a more gradual appearance and may better accommodate longer HO scale equipment.
Check Equipment Minimum Radius
A 24" radius can accommodate a wide range of HO scale locomotives and rolling stock, but minimum-radius requirements vary by model. Particularly long locomotives, passenger cars and specialized equipment may still require broader curves.
Always check the manufacturer's recommended minimum radius for the equipment you plan to operate before finalizing your track plan.
