Atlas HO Code 83 #4 Custom-Line Turnout – Right – ATL562 is a compact right-hand HO scale track switch designed for sidings, yards, industrial tracks and other locations where efficient use of layout space is important. Its #4 geometry allows the diverging route to separate more quickly than broader #6 turnouts, making it especially useful for compact switching areas and complex track arrangements.
Part of the Atlas HO Code 83 Custom-Line track system, ATL562 features nickel silver rail, prototypically fine brown ties, a blackened metal frog and rivetless switch points. It combines realistic HO scale appearance with dependable operation for permanent model railroad trackwork.
#4 Custom-Line Turnout Geometry
ATL562 is a #4 numbered turnout. Compared with broader #6 or #8 turnouts, #4 geometry allows the diverging route to separate from the straight route more quickly, reducing the amount of layout length required for the track arrangement.
This makes the #4 turnout particularly useful for yards, industrial switching districts, engine facilities, storage tracks, compact sidings and other space-conscious trackwork.
Right-Hand Configuration
ATL562 is the right-hand version. When approaching the turnout from the single-track or point end, the diverging route branches toward the right.
Right-hand turnouts can be combined with straight track, flex track and additional turnouts to build passing sidings, crossovers, yard ladders, industrial leads and other HO scale track arrangements.
Blackened Metal Frog
The Atlas HO Code 83 #4 Custom-Line Turnout features a blackened metal frog. The metal frog provides a realistic appearance while forming part of the turnout's electrical and operating design.
Atlas designed its Custom-Line turnouts for reliable electrical conductivity, making them well suited to permanent layouts where dependable low-speed switching operation is important.
Rivetless Switch Points
Atlas Custom-Line turnouts feature rivetless switch points designed to provide superior electrical conductivity while maintaining a cleaner and more prototypical appearance.
The switch points direct locomotives and rolling stock between the straight and diverging routes and should move freely and seat completely against the appropriate stock rail for dependable operation.

Why Choose a #4 Turnout?
A #4 turnout is particularly useful when available layout space is limited. Its compact geometry allows the diverging route to separate from the straight route faster than a broader-numbered turnout, helping modelers fit more switching opportunities and track capacity into a given area.
That makes ATL562 an excellent choice for yard ladders, industrial spurs, locomotive facilities, storage tracks and compact switching layouts.
The tradeoff is tighter diverging geometry. Modelers operating longer locomotives or rolling stock should check the operating requirements of their equipment when deciding between #4, #6 and broader turnout geometry.
#4 vs. #6 Turnouts
The practical difference between a #4 and #6 turnout is how gradually the diverging route moves away from the straight route. A #4 provides more compact geometry, while a #6 provides a broader and more gradual route through the turnout.
For yards and industrial switching areas where maximizing usable track space is important, a #4 can be an excellent choice. For mainlines, passing sidings, crossovers and locations regularly handling longer equipment, broader turnout geometry may be preferable.
Custom-Line vs. Snap-Switch
ATL562 is a numbered Custom-Line turnout and should not be confused with an Atlas Snap-Switch. Atlas specifically notes that Custom-Line turnouts and Snap-Switches use different geometry and cannot simply be substituted for one another in a track plan.
Snap-Switches are designed around sectional curved-track geometry, while ATL562 uses #4 numbered-turnout geometry. Always verify which turnout type is required when following an existing track plan.
Compatible Turnout Control
Atlas designed its HO Code 83 Custom-Line turnouts for use with an under-table switch machine or standard remote and manual Code 83 switch machines, allowing modelers to select the turnout-control method that best suits their layout.
An under-table switch machine can keep the operating mechanism hidden beneath the layout surface, while surface-mounted manual or remote controls provide alternative installation options.
Code 83 Track Construction
Atlas HO Code 83 track features prototypically fine brown ties and nickel silver rail. The finer Code 83 rail profile provides a more scale-appropriate appearance than traditional Code 100 track while retaining dependable operation for HO scale model railroads.
Plan & Test Before Ballasting
Before permanently securing and ballasting ATL562, connect the adjoining track and test locomotives and rolling stock through both the straight and diverging routes. Verify smooth point movement, proper wheel tracking and adequate equipment clearance.
This is particularly important with compact #4 geometry. Check the operating requirements of longer locomotives and rolling stock before using #4 turnouts extensively throughout a layout.
