Atlas HO Code 83 30° Crossing – Nickel Silver – ATL574 is a fixed track crossing designed to allow two independent HO scale track routes to intersect at a 30° angle. Unlike a turnout or switch, a crossing does not select between routes—the rails intersect while trains continue straight through along their respective tracks.
Part of the Atlas HO Code 83 track system, ATL574 combines functional track geometry with a more prototypical appearance. Atlas Code 83 track features fine nickel silver rail and realistic brown ties, providing a lower-profile, more scale-appropriate appearance than traditional Code 100 track.
What Is a 30° Track Crossing?
A track crossing—sometimes called a diamond crossing—is used where two separate railroad tracks physically cross one another. ATL574 creates this intersection at a 30-degree angle.
Both routes remain independent paths through the crossing. A locomotive entering on one track continues straight across the intersecting route rather than being diverted onto the other track.
Crossing vs. Turnout
ATL574 is a crossing, not a turnout or track switch. A turnout contains movable points that allow a train to select between different routes. This 30° crossing has fixed track geometry and simply allows two routes to intersect.
This makes crossings useful for creating intersecting mainlines, junctions, industrial track arrangements, yard trackage and other complex track plans where one route must pass directly across another.
30° Fixed Track Geometry
The 30° crossing angle determines how the two routes intersect. When planning a layout, this fixed geometry can be combined with compatible straight, curved and turnout sections to build the surrounding track arrangement.
Because crossings have fixed geometry, carefully plan and test the adjoining track before permanently securing the crossing. Proper alignment through all four approaches is important for smooth operation.
Atlas HO Code 83 Track
Atlas developed its HO Code 83 track for model railroaders looking for a finer, more prototypical track appearance. The smaller rail profile and brown ties provide a more realistic representation of prototype railroad track while retaining the reliability expected from Atlas track components.
Code 83 refers to the approximate 0.083" rail height. Its lower profile makes Code 83 particularly popular on HO scale layouts where realistic track proportions are a priority.

Where Can a 30° Crossing Be Used?
A 30° crossing can be incorporated anywhere two tracks need to intersect without connecting their routes. Typical applications can include railroad junctions, intersecting mainlines, industrial districts, yard approaches and complex switching areas.
The relatively shallow 30° intersection can also produce a more elongated crossing arrangement than steeper-angle crossings, making the specific crossing angle an important consideration when planning surrounding track geometry.
Plan & Test Your Crossing
Before permanently securing and ballasting ATL574, connect the surrounding track and test equipment through both routes of the crossing. Check alignment at all four approaches and make sure locomotives and rolling stock pass smoothly through the diamond.
Testing before permanent installation makes it much easier to correct alignment or adjoining track geometry if adjustments are necessary.
