Atlas HO Code 83 90° Crossing – Nickel Silver – ATL577 is a fixed track crossing designed to allow two independent HO scale track routes to intersect at a 90° right angle. Unlike a turnout or switch, the crossing does not select between routes—the two tracks intersect while trains continue straight through along their respective paths.
Part of the Atlas HO Code 83 track system, ATL577 combines useful right-angle track geometry with a more prototypical appearance. Atlas Code 83 track features fine brown ties and smaller nickel silver rail, providing a finer and more scale-appropriate appearance than traditional Code 100 track.
What Is a 90° Track Crossing?
A track crossing, commonly called a diamond crossing, is used where two separate railroad tracks physically cross one another. ATL577 creates this intersection at a fixed 90-degree angle, meaning the two routes cross perpendicular to one another.
Both routes remain independent through the crossing. A locomotive entering on one track continues straight across the intersecting route rather than being diverted onto it.
Crossing vs. Turnout
ATL577 is a fixed crossing, not a turnout or track switch. A turnout contains movable points that allow a train to select between different routes. A crossing instead allows two independent tracks to intersect without providing a route from one track onto the other.
This makes the 90° crossing useful anywhere a track needs to pass directly across another route while maintaining completely separate paths through the intersection.
90° Right-Angle Track Geometry
The defining feature of ATL577 is its 90° crossing geometry. The two tracks meet at a right angle, making this crossing useful for track plans where perpendicular routes need to intersect within a relatively compact area.
Right-angle crossings can be particularly useful in industrial areas, yards, terminal trackage and specialized junction arrangements where one track must cross directly over another at a perpendicular angle.
Atlas HO Code 83 Track
Atlas Code 83 track is designed for HO scale model railroaders seeking a finer, more prototypical track appearance. The smaller rail profile and realistic brown ties provide more scale-appropriate proportions than traditional Code 100 track.
Code 83 refers to rail measuring approximately 0.083" high. This lower rail profile helps create more realistic-looking HO scale track while remaining part of Atlas' engineered track system.

Where Can a 90° Crossing Be Used?
A 90° crossing is useful anywhere two tracks need to intersect at a true right angle. This geometry can be especially valuable in industrial switching districts, factory complexes, yard trackage, terminal areas and other compact track arrangements.
Compared with shallower 30° or 45° crossings, the 90° geometry creates a much more abrupt and compact intersection. Choosing the correct crossing angle depends on the surrounding track plan and the direction in which each route needs to continue.
Plan & Test Your Crossing
Because ATL577 has fixed geometry, carefully align the adjoining track at all four approaches before permanently securing the crossing. Test locomotives and rolling stock through both independent routes to make sure equipment passes smoothly through the diamond.
Complete operational testing before permanent ballasting and scenery makes it easier to correct adjoining track alignment if adjustments are necessary.
