This compact right-hand switch machine allows the operator to throw a compatible turnout from a remote location on the layout rather than operating the switch directly at the track.

Atlas designed its compact Code 83 switch machines for use with Code 83, True-Track and Snap-Switches, making ATL585 a versatile replacement or turnout-control component for compatible Atlas HO track systems.

Remote Turnout Control

A switch machine operates the movable points of a model railroad turnout. Changing the position of those points determines which route a locomotive or train follows through the switch.

ATL585 provides remote electrical operation, allowing the turnout to be thrown from another location on the layout instead of requiring the operator to reach the switch itself. This is especially useful for turnouts located farther from the layout edge or in areas where centralized turnout control is preferred.

Right-Hand Configuration

ATL585 is specifically the right-hand version of the Atlas HO Code 83 Remote Switch Machine. The orientation of a surface-mounted switch machine matters because its mechanism must correctly align with the turnout it operates.

For the opposite orientation, use the corresponding Atlas left-hand remote switch machine. Always verify the required orientation of your turnout before selecting a replacement switch machine.

Compatible Atlas Track Systems

Atlas specifies that its Code 83 remote switch machines fit Code 83, True-Track and Snap-Switches. This allows the compact switch-machine design to serve several compatible Atlas HO track applications.

Switch Machine Only – Turnout Not Included

ATL585 is the remote switch machine itself and does not include a complete track turnout. It is intended for use with a compatible Atlas HO switch requiring the right-hand switch-machine configuration.

Separate switch machines are particularly useful when replacing an existing turnout-control mechanism or upgrading compatible trackwork to remote operation without replacing an otherwise usable turnout.

Remote vs. Manual Turnout Operation

A manual switch machine requires the operator to physically change the turnout position at the track. A remote switch machine allows the turnout to be operated electrically from another location on the layout.

Remote control can be especially useful for switches located beyond comfortable reach, larger layouts, yards with multiple turnouts or model railroads using a centralized control panel.
