What Does a Manual Switch Machine Do?

A switch machine operates the movable points of a model railroad turnout. Changing the position of those points determines which track route a locomotive or train follows through the switch.

Manual vs. Remote Switch Machines

A manual switch machine is operated directly at the turnout, while a remote switch machine provides electrical operation from another location on the layout.

Manual operation keeps turnout control simple and works particularly well when the track switch is easily accessible. Remote control can be more convenient for turnouts farther from the layout edge or layouts using centralized turnout controls.
