18" Radius Main Curve Geometry

The Grand Valley track plan makes extensive use of 18" radius HO curved track, with 34 standard 18" radius sections supplemented by half-length and one-third-length 18" radius sections to create the required track geometry.

The fractional curved sections maintain the same 18" radius; they are simply shorter sections of that curve. A 1/2 18" radius section is not a 9" radius curve, and a 1/3 18" radius section is not a 6" radius curve.

Because 18" radius is relatively compact HO scale geometry, modelers should check the minimum-radius requirements of locomotives and rolling stock intended for operation on the finished Grand Valley layout.

Left & Right Turnouts Included

The track pack includes both an Atlas #542 Left Turnout and #543 Right Turnout. These turnouts allow trains to move between the different routes and sidings incorporated into the Grand Valley track plan.

Having both turnout directions included as part of the package helps ensure the switching geometry matches the layout design without requiring the modeler to determine the appropriate turnout components separately.

60° & 90° Crossings

Two fixed track crossings are included: a 60° crossing and a 90° crossing. These are crossings rather than turnouts; they allow two independent tracks to intersect while trains continue along their respective routes.

The crossings help create the more interesting overlapping track arrangement that distinguishes the Grand Valley plan from a basic oval layout.

9" Warren Truss Bridge Included

The package also includes a 9" Warren Truss Bridge, providing the bridge component required by the Grand Valley track plan. Incorporating the bridge into the track package helps coordinate the elevated and crossing portions of the layout while adding an important visual feature to the finished railroad.

Atlas HO Code 83 Track

Atlas HO Code 83 track features nickel silver rail and prototypically fine brown ties. Code 83 provides a finer, more scale-appropriate rail profile than traditional Code 100 track while remaining a dependable choice for HO scale model railroad operation.

What Else Do I Need?

ATL589 is the track package for the Grand Valley layout rather than a complete ready-to-run train set.
