Union Pacific #998 & #999 Yellow & Gray Fantasy Scheme

The Baldwin 12-8-1500/2 Centipede was Baldwin Locomotive Works' ambitious entry into the emerging production road-diesel market. Built between 1945 and 1948, the Centipede featured an exceptionally long carbody supported by enormous articulated half-frames, creating one of the most visually distinctive diesel locomotive designs of the transition era.

Each prototype Centipede measured approximately 91.5 feet long and contained two 1,500-horsepower diesel engines. A two-unit combination therefore represented approximately 6,000 combined horsepower and an extraordinary amount of locomotive for the era.

Union Pacific's connection to the Centipede makes BLI2548 particularly interesting. UP originally ordered two units but never took delivery. Because debate has existed over what road numbers the locomotives might have received, Broadway Limited offered Union Pacific Centipede sets using different hypothetical numbering. BLI2548 represents the UP #998/#999 interpretation in Armour Yellow and Gray.
