Pennsylvania Railroad ALCO RS-3 with Trainphone Equipment

Built by the American Locomotive Company (ALCO) between 1950 and 1956, the RS-3 became one of North America's most recognizable four-axle diesel road switchers. Powered by the ALCO 244 diesel engine, these versatile locomotives were used for local freight service, branchline operations, industrial switching, and other railroad assignments.

The Pennsylvania Railroad operated ALCO RS-3 locomotives throughout its extensive northeastern and midwestern rail network. One of the distinctive features of PRR diesel locomotives was the railroad's Trainphone communication system, which used specialized antenna equipment to provide communication between trains and railroad personnel.
