The prototype Amfleet I passenger cars were introduced beginning in the 1970s as Amtrak worked to modernize the passenger equipment inherited from its predecessor railroads. Built by Budd, the distinctive stainless-steel Amfleet I became one of the most recognizable types of single-level passenger equipment in the United States and continues to be closely associated with Amtrak corridor and intercity passenger service.
