EMD GP40 Prototype History
General Motors Electro-Motive Division introduced the GP40 in 1965 as a 3,000-horsepower, four-axle diesel-electric locomotive powered by the turbocharged 16-645E3 engine.
The GP40 was designed for fast freight and general road service, offering railroads an effective combination of horsepower, speed, and operational flexibility. More than 1,000 examples were constructed before production transitioned to the GP40-2 in 1971.
Many GP40 locomotives continued operating for decades, serving major railroads, regional carriers, and shortlines throughout North America.
