EMD GP40 Prototype History

General Motors Electro-Motive Division introduced the GP40 in 1965 as a high-horsepower, four-axle diesel-electric locomotive designed for freight service. Powered by the turbocharged EMD 16-645E3 diesel engine, the GP40 produced 3,000 horsepower and quickly became a popular choice for railroads throughout North America.

More than 1,000 GP40 locomotives were constructed before production transitioned to the GP40-2 in 1971. Their combination of horsepower, speed, and operational versatility made them valuable for a wide range of freight assignments.
