General Electric 44 Tonner Prototype History

The GE 44 Tonner was introduced in 1940 as a lightweight diesel-electric switcher weighing approximately 88,000 pounds. Its design was influenced by railroad labor agreements requiring additional crew members on locomotives weighing more than 90,000 pounds.

More than 300 GE 44 Tonners were constructed between 1940 and 1956 for railroads, shortlines, industries, and military installations. Their compact size made them particularly useful for switching assignments in smaller yards and industrial facilities.
