The Tangent Scale Models HO Scale Southern SOU #42409 Greenville 86' Quad Plug Door Boxcar recreates one of Southern Railway's enormous automotive parts cars in its distinctive as-built February 1970 brown delivery scheme. Designed specifically for specialized auto-parts service, these massive 86-foot high-cube boxcars provided tremendous interior volume and four large plug doors for moving bulky automotive components between suppliers and assembly plants.
Southern's prototype cars were assigned to the GM automotive parts pool serving Lansing, Michigan on the Grand Trunk Western. Their delivery appearance featured the distinctive “SOUTHERN GIVES A GREEN LIGHT TO INNOVATIONS” slogan, with the car number and CAPY data positioned on the center panels. The right side also carries prominent “SUPER CUSHION SERVICE” lettering, giving SOU #42409 a classic early-1970s Southern appearance.
