This three-car set includes Conrail #715353, #715355, and #715410, giving N Scale model railroaders three individually numbered examples of the distinctive Conrail Class 888F general purpose flat car.
These prototype flatcars began as Pullman-Standard PS-4 flatcars built in 1960 for the New York Central System. The cars later passed to Penn Central before becoming part of the Conrail fleet. Conrail refurbished and repainted members of the fleet, with work eventually being handled by the Hollidaysburg Car Shop.
The prototype 53'-6" flatcars featured a welded fish-belly steel frame designed to efficiently distribute forces between the center of the car and the bolsters. These durable general-purpose flatcars were classified as FM flatcars and could handle bulky loads that were unsuitable for enclosed boxcars, including finished lumber, machinery, and other large equipment. As cars aged out of interchange service, examples also continued working in maintenance-of-way assignments.
