Introduced in 1950, the Fairbanks-Morse H16-44 was a 1,600-horsepower, four-axle diesel-electric road switcher powered by the manufacturer's distinctive opposed-piston diesel engine. In 1955, Fairbanks-Morse introduced the redesigned Phase III H16-44, featuring raised walkways, simplified hood construction and updated electrical equipment. Its appearance closely resembled the larger Fairbanks-Morse H24-66 Train Master, making the Phase III H16-44 one of the most recognizable road switchers of the period.
