Southern Railway Gantt Manufacturing Bay Window Cabooses
Southern Railway turned to Gantt Manufacturing of Greenville, South Carolina for a new generation of modern steel bay window cabooses. Between 1969 and 1974, Gantt delivered 253 cabooses to Southern, including cars configured for both road and local service. Their welded construction, large bay windows, distinctive roof profile and bright red Southern paint made them immediately recognizable throughout the railroad's extensive system.
The Gantt-built fleet included Southern Railway X200-X250 and X260-X271 local-service cabooses along with X403-X429, X430-X485 and X486-X592 road-service cabooses. Together, these cars became a major component of Southern's caboose fleet and could be found behind freight trains throughout the railroad's territory.
Road Service & Local Service Southern Cabooses
Southern's Gantt cabooses were constructed in different configurations based on their intended assignments. Road-service cabooses were generally finished in Southern's familiar solid red appearance, while local-service cars were particularly distinctive because of their contrasting yellow bay windows.
The prototypes also changed throughout their operating lives. Early cars could feature roof walkways that were subsequently removed, while later deliveries reflected more modern caboose construction. Local-service cars received additional modifications over time, including rooftop solar panels used to supply power for marker lights.
Southern Railway to Norfolk Southern
These cabooses were not limited to the Southern Railway era. Following the creation of Norfolk Southern, former Southern Gantt cabooses continued operating into the 1990s, with some surviving considerably longer. Examples have appeared in later Norfolk Southern configurations, heritage applications and modern shoving-platform service, giving modelers opportunities to use this prototype across several decades.
Tangent's extensive variation in tooling makes these cabooses useful for accurately representing specific Southern and Norfolk Southern eras rather than relying on a generic bay window caboose decorated for multiple periods.
Highly Detailed Tangent HO Scale Cabooses
Tangent designed its HO Scale Southern Railway caboose system around the differences found among the prototype cars. Depending on the specific model and era represented, details can include different body configurations, roof arrangements, bay windows, brake equipment, battery compartments, solar panels, marker lights, generators, trucks and other era-specific components.
Models also feature finely rendered separately applied details, CNC-machined 33-inch wheels and genuine Kadee scale couplers. Selected ready-to-run versions incorporate lighting features appropriate to the prototype, including interior lighting and end marker lighting.
Weathering Southern Railway Cabooses
Southern's bright red cabooses are excellent candidates for subtle or heavy weathering depending on the modeled period. Faded red paint, soot, road grime, dirty underframes, roof discoloration and rust streaking can transform a new model into a convincing representation of a hard-working railroad caboose. Browse our model paints and weathering products for supplies to detail and weather your Southern Railway or Norfolk Southern caboose fleet.
