The EMD GP38 was a versatile 2,000-horsepower, four-axle diesel locomotive designed for road freight, local freight, switching and yard assignments. A total of 706 GP38 locomotives were produced, and the type became a common sight on North American railroads throughout the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. Many GP38s were later rebuilt and upgraded, extending the service lives of these dependable EMD road switchers for decades.
