Shop Rapido HO Scale EMD GP38 locomotives at Fusion Scale Hobbies. Rapido's highly detailed GP38 brings one of EMD's classic four-axle road-switcher designs to HO Scale with extensive prototype-specific tooling, railroad-specific details and the exceptional level of accuracy Rapido Trains is known for.
The EMD GP38 was a 2,000-horsepower, four-axle diesel locomotive designed for versatile freight and road-switching service. Its naturally aspirated 16-cylinder diesel engine distinguished it from the turbocharged GP40, while its dependable design made the GP38 a long-lived locomotive on railroads throughout North America.
Highly Detailed Rapido EMD GP38 Models
Rapido developed its HO Scale GP38 lineup to capture the many differences found among prototype locomotives. Depending on the railroad and road number, models feature low or high short hoods, dynamic or non-dynamic brake configurations, different air filters, battery box doors, exhaust arrangements, fuel tanks, truck sideframes and other prototype-specific details.
Additional detailing includes factory-installed grab irons and handrails, detailed underframes with traction motor cables and air-system components, highly detailed cab interiors and Rapido's metal side handrails with individual stanchions. Appropriate lighting features are reproduced according to the prototype, including headlights, rear lights, class lights, ditch lights, beacons and inspection lights where applicable.
Santa Fe, B&O, CSX, Southern & Norfolk Southern GP38s
The Rapido GP38 lineup represents several of the railroads most closely associated with this versatile EMD locomotive. Models include Santa Fe Yellow Warbonnet GP38s, Baltimore & Ohio locomotives, multiple CSX paint schemes, high-short-hood Southern Railway GP38s and high-nose Norfolk Southern locomotives.
Road-number-specific differences make these locomotives especially appealing to prototype-focused model railroaders. Rather than relying on a single generic GP38 body, Rapido recreates many of the spotting features, lighting arrangements and equipment differences appropriate to individual railroad versions.
DC & DCC/Sound Rapido GP38 Locomotives
Rapido HO Scale GP38 locomotives have been produced in both standard DC versions and factory-equipped DCC/Sound versions, giving model railroaders options for conventional DC layouts as well as digitally controlled operations. DCC/Sound models feature ESU LokSound for realistic locomotive sound and digital control.
Whether you're recreating Santa Fe freight operations, assembling a classic B&O roster, modeling CSX, or adding high-nose Southern and Norfolk Southern power to your railroad, the Rapido EMD GP38 combines prototype accuracy with the detail and performance expected from a premium HO Scale locomotive.
