Walthers Mainline HO Scale 72' Centerbeam Flatcars

Walthers Mainline HO Scale 72' Centerbeam Flatcars

Bring modern lumber and building-material traffic to your HO scale railroad with Walthers Mainline HO Scale 72' Centerbeam Flatcars. Based on the distinctive centerbeam flatcars that became favorites with North American railroads and building-material shippers beginning in the 1980s, these models are an excellent choice for recreating realistic lumber trains, building-products traffic, manifest freights and modern freight operations.

The prototype 72-foot centerbeam flatcar was specially designed to speed the loading and unloading of dimensional lumber, plywood, wallboard and other packaged building materials. A tall center partition provides additional stability for loads while allowing forklifts and other material-handling equipment to access the car from either side. Their efficiency helped centerbeam flatcars become a familiar sight throughout the North American rail network.

Standard and Opera Window Centerbeam Flatcars

Prototype centerbeam cars were produced in several configurations, including cars with distinctive oval openings in the center partition commonly known as "opera windows", as well as standard centerbeam construction using steel beams and rigging. Walthers Mainline reproduces both styles as appropriate for individual road names, giving HO scale modelers the opportunity to build more authentic freight car fleets.

With their unmistakable 72-foot profile and open centerbeam construction, these cars are ideal for layouts representing railroad operations from the 1980s through the modern era. They can be operated individually in manifest freights or assembled into larger cuts and unit-style consists serving lumber distributors, building-material suppliers and other rail-served industries.
